Jamie Fristrom has some thoughts on whether video games should include minigames or not. My personal opinion is that minigames enhance a game when used as side options to break up the monotony of doing the same thing over and over, but should never, ever be placed in the middle of a game as a barrier to progressing. There’s nothing more irritating in a game than getting stuck because someone decided that what your RPG needed to liven it up was a mandatory game of best out of 100 in rock, paper, scissors.
