“Rosa Parks of the Golden Arches”

April 1, 2005

Teach and Learn links to this Tribune story about a Hyde Park student who was arrested for refusing to move from the dedicated "non-student" area of her local McDonald’s. The policy was dropped after the event. Of course, privately-owned businesses have the right to refuse service to any customer, but it’s certainly not a good marketing move to show such blantant discrimination.

Interestingly, the Tribune talks to a Constitutional law professor from Berkeley who suggests that the student would not have a Constitutional claim since she does not belong to a protected class of people.
