FIRE – First Amendment 101

July 25, 2005

The Torch, FIRE’s blog, points out a recent First Amendment violation in New Jersey:

FIRE is currently involved in a case at William Paterson University in New Jersey,
which recently convicted a student employee of “discrimination” and
“harassment” for describing homosexuality as a “perversion” in a
private response to a professor’s unsolicited announcement of a
university event that promoted a positive view of lesbian relationships.

FIRE (the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) deals with a lot of cases of this type on college campuses, but this one is notable for involving a statewide policy, rather than only a school speech code.
