Turkey and the EU

October 4, 2005

I’m kind of surprised this isn’t getting more attention: Granted, Turkey’s admission into the EU could be a fairly long way off, but the impact on the United States (trade, debt, world relations, etc.) will be huge. It’s also interesting to note that, before Turkey will be granted membership, they have to establish a secular state. Pretty nuts considering Turkey’s history, both recent and less recent, and the religious history of all nations involved.

Austria’s not too happy about it. Check the BBC’s coverage for a complete rundown of EU countries and their respective support of Turkey membership.
