No waivers for California exit exam

October 19, 2005

Joanne Jacobs highlights a San Francisco Chronicle story about Gov. Schwarzenegger vetoing a plan to give special education students waivers to graduate high school without passing the state exit exam. Joanne points out that the skills required to pass the exam are basic necessities for any of the chosen careers of the student featured in the article. Some people seem to forget that a high school diploma is supposed to represent a certain level of ability. It does no one any good to water it down, especially the kids involved, who will be better served by getting the skills to pass it.
