BBC NEWS: Referendum crisis looms in Iraq

October 22, 2005

BBC News has a summary of the week in Iraq that mentions Saddam’s trial and the current status of the Iraqi constitution:

The election commission says it is still not able to announce even the provisional results of the referendum despite promising to do so by 20 October.

Instead it has sent special teams out to five provinces to check what it says are "unusual" results and turnout figures.

Two provinces are already thought to have voted "no." If one more province (possibly Ninevah) voted "no" as well, then the referendum will not have passed.
