November 4, 2005

Welcome to novel-writing insanity!  A group of amateur writers teamed up in 2000 and created NaNoWriMo, short for "National Novel Writing Month" (although it’s actually international, but the designers didn’t like the sound of that quite as much.)  Every November since, they have bravely gone where no one has gone before, and still wouldn’t if they were not a little loopy.  The goal is to write an entire novel of 50,000 words or more in one month.  Last year, 6,000 intrepid souls out of 42,000 starters managed to crank one out, and this year even more entrants will give it a try.  I don’t know whether to applaud the initiative or cower in fear at the thought of that many rushed, chunky pieces of fiction getting possible exposure to the publishing circuit.  🙂
