Church threatened with removal of tax exempt status
November 8, 2005
From the AP: Church: Anti-war sermon imperils tax status:
The Internal Revenue Service has warned a
prominent liberal church it could lose its tax-exempt status because of
an anti-war sermon a guest preacher gave on the eve of the 2004
presidential election, church officials say.
Now, provided that the church leaders are accurately representing the IRS’s warning, this is very disturbing news. I saw this story this morning, and was hoping that I would find time today to comment on this more fully, but it looks like that won’t happen, so I’ll just note that I think it is extremely dangerous to suggest that religious institutions don’t have a right to promote opinions on the pressing issues of the day, political or otherwise. If you have thoughts, make them known in the comments.
