Nuclear Ambitions

January 27, 2006

Just out of curiosity, I thought I’d pose a question, for anyone who feels like discussing:

How much confidence do you have in our ability to keep any country from going nuclear over the long term?

By "our" I mean any alliance of nations that opposes the continuation of nuclear weapons.  We struggle with the possibility that Iran might have The Bomb, but Iran is only one in a long list of countries that are volatile and hostile to Western interests.  Every time we influence a sovereign nation against arming itself with WMD, we deal with an increase in probability that some nation will defy us in the future.  What then?  Can we deny this type of power to all nations indefinitely?
